First day of a three day expedition to bag some southern Wainwrights. I got up very early and after the usual long drive arrived at the Woolpack inn at the foot of the Hardknott pass just after 9.00 AM.
This was the hottest day of the year so far and the temperature was in the low thirties when I got back to the campsite. The original plan was to include Harter Fell in this walk but by the time I was approaching the saddle between Green Crag and Crook Crag I had run out of steam due to the heat. I was stopping for a break and a drink of water every five minutes. Eventually I arrived at the summit of Green Crag and was welcomed by a lovely cooling breeze. By co-incidence a group of walkers arrived at the summit at the same time (they had come up from the Birker Road direction). These were the only people I saw on the walk. I sat down and stayed at the summit to enjoy the magnificent view in all directions.

I looked across to Harter Fell and it was an easy decision to just head back to the Woolpack - there was no way I had the energy to include Harter Fell on this walk.

Harter Fell - not today.
On the way back I was extremely tired and managed to lose the path. Fortunately, I had taken a waypoint near the edge of the plateau on the outward bound leg, so this helped me locate the track (I was about 400 yards out !!). Soon I was back at the car and made the short journey to the Fisherground campsite near Esdale Bridge,

Great to get in at least one fell on this hot hot hot day. I spent the afternoon recovering in my tent.
