Base Brown - Success 4th August 2019

After Mellbreak , I drove over the Honnister pass to Seathwaite farm campsite. I was in the van , so no tent needed. After a cup of tea and something to eat, I couldn't wait for nightfall so I could get some kip after the hot hike up Mellbreak. Sunday morning , I had a quick breakfast and moved the van to the lane approaching the farm and was off on the walk for 7.00 AM. A lovely morning with some cloud cover - so not too hot. Last time I had tried this I had Meg with me and couldn't get her over the scramble just above Seathwaite slabs. On my own the scramble was no problem.

From below the climb up the side of Sour Milk Gill looks steep and difficult, but it is a well constructed path which zig zags its way up with the sting in the tail of the scramble near the top. Very enjoyable with superb views looking back.

The walk along Gillercombe was a delight. I had the whole beautiful valley to myself on this Sunday morning.

Eventually the path meets the track up to Green Gable. A left turn takes you up to Base Brown summit via a boggy patch(Blackmoor Pols).

Because I had the errand of collecting some of the Grand-Kids from Workington to take back home this was a short there and back walk, with the highlight for me being the walk along Gillercombe...magnificent.

About 4 miles. OS OL 4. The last of the Western Fells to complete and Wainwright # 211.
