Pennine Way day 7 Gargrave to Malham 25/06/2024

My train from Langley Mill was cancelled, So ended up catching 4 trains (took 4 hours) to get to Gargrave. Langley Mill - Ilkeston - Sheffield - Leeds - Gargrave.

St Andrews Gargrave

River Aire in the centre of Gargrave
The route was largely agricultural land with a nice section along the River Aire near Airton.

I was glad to be only doing seven miles as the the walk started just before mid day and it was hot.
Nice pitch in the corner at Riverside Campsite Malham

I had a nice evening in Malham which consisted mostly of lying down outside the tent and a meal and a pint at the Beck Hall Hotel (few hundred yards from
the campsite).

About 7 miles. A very pleasant (albeit hot) walk to Malham.

A wander on the Wye 20th June

A short 2  mile stroll along the River Wye. Anne and I were meetuing Kath and Joe in Bakewell. Anne dropped me off at Haddon Hall and I walked from there along the Wye into Bakewell.

Pennine Way day 6. Earby Hostel - Gargrave 07/06/2024

Just a half day walk to Gargrave where I had an open train ticket home.

Apart from a small section of moorland walking before Thorton in Craven most of todays route was country lanes ,agricultural land and a small section of canal. I had a good sleep at the hostel so was up for 5 and on the trail by 5:30. Great to be out so early in fine weather. My favorite time of the day for walking.

A welcome break mid walk. This was at the entrance to a farm just outside Thorton in Craven

Coming into Gargrave
I was in Gargrave before 10. The next train was at 10:18, so I had time for a cuppa in the Dalesman's cafe before catching the train home.

An uneventful but pleasant 7 miles.

Pennine Way Day 5. Ponden Mill to Earby Hostel 06/06/2024

Packing up didn't take too long and soon I was of on the trail along the side of the resevoir in good weather to start with.

Just before climbing up onto Icornshaw Moor there was a short but heavy downpour. Forthunately, after that it stayed dry with a gentle breeze for the rest of the day.

Start of climb up onto Icornshaw Moor

Depite the moor being a fairly bleak place I enjoyed this part of the walk. There were flagstones to help with the navigation and the boggy bits. As I dropped into Icornshaw there was a series of hunting lodges dotted around. Locally , these are known as cowlings.

Dropping down into Icornshaw.

After passing through Icornshaw the trail passed through mostly agricultural land before dropping down to Lothersdale where I had a welcome cup of tea in the village pub.

Pinhaw Beacon and trig point

After Lothersdale the trail climbed out of the village and onto the final section of moor. This was very enjoyable as the path was good , the wind was light and the views were spectacular from Pinhaw Beacon.

Shortly after dropping down to Pinhaw Beacon to a minor road I left the Pennine way and joined the path down into Earby and the hostel. This was about two miles. Great stay in the hostel. I was the only person booked in until there were a couple of late arrivals. Fellow pennine wayfarers who had planned to camp at Lothersdale , not realising the camp site no longer existed.

Another brilliant days walking . About 13.5 miles
