Yorkshire Wolds Way Day 3. Millington - Thixendale. 21/03/24

Not much sleep overnight and a very sore/stiff left ankle. I got up early, put an ankle support on and took my time cooking breakfast, clearing up and packing. By the time I was rady to go I felt that I could walk off the ankle stiffness and hopefully have another good day.

I decided to walk out of the village on the road to avoid the slippery steep path up to the ridge. I reckoned this would save me wet feet (and possibly a wet back side) within the first 30 mins of the day. The cost was possibly an extra  2 miles to get back on the ridge . This mean't repeating the last bit of yeaterdays walk.

The quickest way back up to the ridge and Warren Farm is up the bank on the path labelled Minster Way.

Lovely walk today passing close to Huggate, through Fridaythorpe and through more picuresque dry valleys.

First Dale of the day(Sylvan Dale). The trail crossed this with a steep path upthe other side

Right the way along the bottom of Holm Dale

Luxury bus stop. I stopped here for a snack

Church in Fridaythorpe.

Fridaythorpe is the hghest village on the trail at 550 feet.

Cross Keys - Home for the night.

I was really tired when I got to Thixendale due to the lack of sleep last night. I was really pleased to get in my room just after 3pm (after knocking on the pub door - didn't open until 5). I had a shower , a cup of tea, and got in bed for a couple of hours .....heaven!!! Huge bowl of bangers and mash for supper followed by a great nights sleep.

Brilliant day. I absolutely loved it. About 14.5 miles.

Yorkshire Wolds Way day 2. South Cave - Millington. 20/03/2024

Second and longest day on the trail. Light rain / drizzle all day.

I set off early (5:30) from South Cave, as I had 20 miles to cover. First half of the walk to Goodenham was steady with a few ups and downs.
View from one of the lovely poetry benches just outside South Cave

Goodmenham Church

Well preserved trig point on top of Sober Hill

There was a tea shop (Cat and Drill ) in Goodmenham which was fantastic. After twelve wet miles it was great to stop for a cup of tea and a toasted tea cake.

The trail then continued northward throgh Londensboro park and village, and then the last few miles there was quite a few farm yards and fields to negotiate. The grip on my trail shoes (Altra Lone Peak 6) was definitely not as good as boots in te mud.

Not too many pics today dure to the wet overcast weather.

I walked a mile or so with a couple of walkers who were doing one section of the trail. I left them just as the path headed onto the ridge above Millington, and they were then walking to Poklington where there are bus services.

Accomodation for the night

I turned up at the village hall looking like the mud monster and interrupted the local scrabble group!
After a nice meal in the local pub I returned to the village hall and started to dry out my kit. My left ankle started seizing up overnight and was very painful. Took some pain killers and put an ankle support on in the morning. Part of the deal with the village hall is thta they left the fridge stocked with food for a cooked breakfast which was fantastic.

Despite the grotty weather I really enjoyed this second day. The signage was superb , leading to easy navigation.

Yorkshire Wolds Way Day 1 March 19th 2024. Hessle to South Cave

I have had the hand brake on the prep for the last week as I had been getting some knee pains. I think it may have been down to a lot of walking on tarmac / hard surfaces. Anyway, it was with a little trepidation and a lot of excitement. that  I set of on day 1 of this adventure.

Anne gave me a lift to the station

The route along the humber estuary and under the bridge was brilliant. The only bit of this section I didn't enjoy was getting across the major road on the edge of North Ferriby.

Fox and Coney South Cave - first night accomodation.

After a very enjoyable 13 miles I arrived in South Cave and checked in at the Fox and Coney pub. The local shop was open so I bought some extra supplies for day 2, and then had a nice fish and chip meal at the pub before a good nights rest.

Fantastic first day. Perfect walking weather and no strains/ injuries.
13 Miles.
