Nightmare journey. A1 closed – I didn’t have a sat nav or a
road map – what a muppet !!. I called Anne and she rescued me with some
directions cross country through Leyburn and Hawes. Then driving down the shore of Ullswater
there was a bike time trial – narrow roads – lot of traffic and cyclists.
Eventually arrived at the Patterdale Hotel car park at 9.45 (nearly 5 hour journey).

Angle Tarn Pike Summit |
Anyway – the rest of the day was superb. Sunny with some
cloud cover and a slight breeze - perfect
- Head
out of the village (South) and after 100 yards turn left down the minor
road to Rooking.
- After
a short stroll on the road Boredale Hause is signposted. This is a well
defined , averagely steep path which winds its way up the fell to Boredale
Hause.
- From
Boredale Hause I took the right hand footpath which leads to Angle Tarn.
- There
is a fork in the path – I found out later that these paths then both join
before Angle Tarn. I took the higher path and eventually Angle Tarn comes
into view. This is a beautiful and impressive mountain lake.
- There
is a (not very clear) path up a grassy slope up to the pikes. This is
steep but short. From the South summit you get fantastic views to Angle
Tarn and the High Street Range. I stopped here for a short break and took
pleanty of photos.
- I
headed down of the summit and a short stretch of walking off the higer
path I cut across to the lower path heading back to Boredale Hause.
- The
path up to Place Fell is well defined and steep in places. It is quite a
slog.

Looking back up on the way down |
- Eventually
the summit plateau was reached and a few hundred yards later the summit
itself. I was surprised what a big expanse the top is. Fantastic views all
around , especially the Helvellyn range
- Rather than take the footpath which would
eventually lead to Sandwick, I took a smaller , less distinct path which
descended steeply down the West Flank of the Fell before arriving at the
Lakeside (well a couple of hundred yards back) path which took me back to Patterdale.
Wainwright’s # 66 and 67.Another, unforgettable walk in this
beautiful part of the world.
