Cleveland Way Day 5 Saltburn on Sea to Samdsend 8th April 2025

I travelled to Saltburn the day before and stayed at SaltburN House Hotel, just about half a mile from the trail. I had plenty of time for a wander on the sea front followed by fish ad chips that afternoon.

The hotel left me a continental breakfast out the night before so I could get an early breakfast. After some tea and toast I set off around 7 am.

Once I got on the trail behind the Ship inn the sighnposting for the rest of the day was excellent. For the first couple of hours I was walking directly into a low sun with no clouds in the sky.

The sun just coming up. The start of a brilliant days walking.

After leaving Saltburn the day was a series of cliff top sections which then dropped down to seaside villages before climbing back up to the cliff path. The sequence was :-

  • Saltburn
  • Skinningrove
  • Staithes
  • Port Mulgrew
  • Runswick Bay
  • Sandsend

Big Moor - Longshaw Estate - Totley Moor 2/4/2025

More practice for the second half of the Cleveland Way next week. This walk was based on a walk from my Dark Peak walks book. The start in the book is Fox House pub, but I parked on the layby on the A621 just outside Baslow near Big Moor.

The first section to the farm house at Bar Brook Resevoir I have done a few times. As soon as I got round the farm house I saw a group of red deer. I checked on-line and it is a herd of red deer that live on Big Moor, but I am not sure if the ones I saw were fallow deer.

After following the footpath on Big Moor past Lady's Cross the trail crosses the edge of White Edge Moor before meeting a road junction with Longshaw estate the other side of the junction.

Longshaw Estate

Stopped at the visitor centre for a cuppa and scone, and then left the estate at the junction with Fox House Inn.

We used to come out to this area regularly with the kids when we lived in Sheffield

The trail then crossed Totley Moor before crossing a road to return to the edge of Big Moor. I followed the footpath back to the farm next to the resevoir and then back on the same route out from the start for about a mile back to the van.

Great walk. I'll definitely do again. About 11 Miles.

Mam Tor - Brown Knoll 12th March 2025

Fantastic walk. It actually started snowing when I got to the top of Jacobs ladder !! I think some people may not like the section from Brown Knoll to Rushup Edge, but I love it. You can get into a nice rythm across the slabs, and it is rare to see many people ( I saw a couple of walkers today). Parked at the NT car park just a short steep climb away from the top of Mam Tor

Heading down from Mam Tor along the Great Ridge

I walked as far as Hollins Cross and then turned left and headed down into the vale of Edale towards Barber Booth

I'll be at the other end of the PW in a couple of months time
