Rushup Edge - Southead May 2020

First proper hike for over two month, as the lockdown restrictions are eased. I didn't bring Meg on this one as it was a hot day and I wasn't sure how much water there was on the route for cooling here down. A good decision as I did come across a number of dried out stream beds on the route. This was a new route and comprised:-

• Parking on the edge of Castleton just before the 'broken road'
• Walk the full length of Rushup Edge
• Take the Penine Bridleway path from the end of Rushup Edge to Southhead
• Southhead to Mt Famine
• Back to the foot of Southhead
• Path to Brown Knoll
• Brown Knoll back to Rushup Edge
• Back to the car.

The path from Brown Knoll to Rushup edge was paved with stone slabs all te way. What a differeence from when I did it many years ago and ended up to my thighs in bog !!

Lockdown Walks April May 2020

For all of April and most of May the country has been in lockdown due the coronavirus pandemic. This mean't we were allowed one local outing per day for exercise. Fortunately, we have a great network of paths and tracks around the village, so I was out every day. I didn't always take my camera, but here is a selection of pics from when I did take it along.

Woodside Shipley Park 11th March 2020

Local walk today.

• Past the cricket ground
• Down the footpath to Woodside.
• Along Woodside for a few hundred yards.
• Across the fields back to Smalley
• Down the side of the nursing home
• Cross Main Road to Bell Lane
• All the way down Bell Lane to Shipley Park.
• Back home via the tracks now belonging to the Woodland Trust

A nice 5 mile mile wander

Thors Cave 2/3/2020

It was a spur of the moment decision to do this and in the end it turned out to be a smash and grab there and back walk to Thors cave from Wetton Mill. I now know how to get there and what the parkig situation is so next time I'll do a bigger walk.

I had a bit of a wander around before starting the walk. I parked a Wetton Mill car park and then realized that it wasn't a public car park , so I went back to fetch the van and moved it to a nearby layby. I then had a wander up the hill behind Wetton Mill to enjoy the view before descending back and starting the walk.

The walk was starightforward with a steep but good path to climb up to the cave.
