Derwent Edge 14th May 2017

Another brilliant walk along Derwent Edge. Parked at a layby on the road to Fairholmes, and walked along Ladybower to the A57. From there it was a short walk along the road and then
Ashopton - Whinstone Lee Tor - Wheel Stones-Back Tor-Lost Lad - Derwent Res-Derwent Dam-Fairholmes - back to car park.

Red Screes 8th April 2017

Another four in the bag. Red Screes , Middle Dodd, Little Hart Crag and High Hartsop Dodd.

This was a there and back again walk. From Ambleside to the top of the Scandale pass. From the top of the pass I turned right to climb Red Screes, and Middle Dodd, and then back down to the pass to do the opposite ridge of Little HArt Crag and High Hartsop Dodd.

Meg was with me (entertaining as always) and the weather was stunning.

Wymying Brook - Stanage Edge 31/03/2017

 New walk I got from the Paul Beasley Book - Walks in the Dark Peak.

The bit missing off the map is where I parked - Upper Burbage Bridge. The walk from the book starts at the car park at Redmires Res and cuts across the moor to the start of Wyming Brook.

Toutbeck Tongue Wansfell Pike March 24th 2017

After the previous camping trip I decided I was going to stick to one day trips until warmer weather. The

plan was to park at Troutbeck and do Troutbeck Tongue and Wansfell effectively as two separate walks.

For Troutbeck Tongue I used the walk the lakes guide which as usual was brilliant. Very straightforward navigation up Ing Lane to Hagg Bridge and then up the nose of the tongue (if that makes sense!!)

Planning to do Wansfell on the same day I opted for the simple back again route , knowing that most of the way back I could safely let Meg off her lead.

On return to Troutbeck I checked the map and headed off for the start of Nanny Lane. This was a straightforward , well signposted slog up the old drovers road and then across the fell side to the summit of Wansfell Pike. I was pretty tired at this point - not having much to eat (I left my food in the car). I should have done more research , because to correctly claim the Wainwright I should also have walked north along the ridge to the higher summit of Wansfell. Ah well...I'll have to come back.

Glenridding Dodd, Sheffield Pike, Great Mell Fell & Little Mell Fell 3/3/2017 and 4/3/2017

I decided to try camping on this trip. I bought a Coleman pop up dome tent which had plenty of room for Meg and myself. It is not quite an instant pop up like the ones from Decathalon, but is easily erected (by me) in about 5 minutes. The campsite at Gillside (Glenridding) was very soggy (need to pack wellies next time). I was also their first customer of the year. I wonder why...could it be because it was bloody freezing overnight and it p***** it down all night !!

So the plan for day 1 was to climb up to Glenridding Dodd, then Sheffield Pike and Hart Side and then back down via Greenside Road. Fortunately, for the walk the rain held off and we had an excellent day.

The camp site is in an excellent location for this walk, so it didn't take long before I was ascending to Glenridding Dodd via the Rake. Again , I found the directions in walk the lakes excellent - it is just the little details that describe where paths and turnoffs are which prove invaluable. Soon we were at our first summit for the day

The navigation across to Sheffield Pike wasn't that straightforward. The route should have took over Heron Pike but I ended up on a slightly steeper ascent to the right of Heron Pike. Eventually I picked up the soggy track to the summit cairn with some magnificent views of the higher snow capped Helvellyn range.

I then descended down to the footbridge near the disused mines. From there I managed to get onto the ridge heading towards White Stones, but as the mist was rolling in towards me I decided to do a u turn , so Hart Side will have to be done on another day.

I got back to camp around 4 and it started raining. So after a cup of tea we got into the tent for a well deserved rest. It stopped raining just long enough to get a hot meal down me and then it was back in the tent for a long , cold wet night.

The plan for Saturday was two short separate walks - Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell
