Pennine Way day 10 Hawes - Tan Hill Inn 12/07/2024

The hostel was perfectly placed to step straight back onto the trail.

I set off at 6AM. The weather was perfect - Dry,cool and still. The first section was out of town and over a series of fields before arriving at Hardraw.

Haylands Bridge

I have seen Hardraw Force before (Behind the Green Dragon pub), so decided I wasn't going to do the detour today. Soon I was on the main climb of the day up to Great Shunner Fell.

The wind picked up and the temperature dropped  as I climbed higher. By the time I reached the summit shelter it was misty and cold. I was struggling to get my hands warm. Anyway , I sat down in the shelter and had my breakfast in the mist.

A shame that there were no views. The way down into Thwaite was pretty soggy , including a broken walking pole.

Good job I wasn't camping on this trip.!

It was great to arrive in Thwaite. It was 10:30 , so I had a rest on a bench in the centre of the village waiting for the tea room to open,  With ten minutes left to wait I impatiently set off ..... the wrong way out of the village !!.After a U turn I arrived back in the centre and the tea shop was open. One freshly baked scone and lovely pot of tea later I was off the right way out of the village towards Keld.

Swaledale was beautiful, and the pictures looking down to the river Swale from the hillside (North Gang Scar) don't do the actual view justice.

When I arrived at Keld I had a short break at the falls just down from Kidson Force.

Falls on the outskirts of Keld.

So, I was now on the last leg of todays trek ....up onto the moors and across to Tan Hill Inn. I really enjoyed this section ad the weather was calm and clear and I had some great views includeing the Nine Standards Rigg in the distance.

I had a couple of hours wait at Tan Hill Inn as Anne had been delayed on the A1. I walked a few hundred yards on the next leg just to see what the trail looked like. However, Anne turned up and then after a drink, we set off for our camp at Barnard Castle.

A brilliant days walk - up there with Malham - Horton. About 17 miles.

Pennine Way Day 9 Horton in Ribblesdale to Hawes 11/07/2024

I arrived at Horton in Ribbledale station at 10:30 AM which was the earliest time available. After a short walk down from the station down to the The Crown pub I was back on the trail.

Most of todays trek was along an old drovers road /track , and a section of roman road. As a result navigation was straightforward.

What I really enjoyed about todays walk was looking around and seeing the three peaks of Penyghent , Ingleborough and Whernside bringing back memories of that succesful challenge several back in 2017.

An overcast day today , so the photography is not great

The final part of the walk was across open moorland on Ten End and then a series of farm fields and country lanes before arriving  at the village of Gayle followed closely by Hawes.

After picking up some supplies from the Spar shop I arrived at the Chapel Indepependent Hostel.

I had a pleasant evening and a good sleep at the hostel.

Another great days walking on this fantastic trail. Approx 13.5 miles.
