24th Nov 2013 Stannage Edge - Higger Tor

This was a slight variation on a walk I have done before. Parked up at the layby opposite Higger Tor on the Ringinlow Road out of Hathersage.

  • Footpath across to Stannage Edge. Short climb up to the trig point and then turn right.

  • Follow the footpath across to Burbage Bridge and then pick up the Sheffield Country Walk trail

  • Follow the track along the side of the valley with Higger Tor and Carl Wark to the right.

  • Eventually the path reaches the A6187 at Toads Mouth.

  • Short stretch along the road and then pick up the path to Carl Wark.

  • Carl Wark Hill Fort and then the (by Lake District standards) climb up to Higger Tor - across the top and then drop down to the car park.

Great views all around - Nice half day out

27th October 2013 The Roaches

A storm with Gale force winds had been forecast for later in the day , so I thought it would be good to get out and do at least a short walk.

So I drove out to Leek and then towards Buxton. Just a couple of miles out take a left to Upper Hulme and the road then takes you to a series of laybys along the bottom edge of the Roaches.

The walk was very simple and didn't need much navigation. Walk along the road (which at that point is single track with hardly any traffic. Eventually it gradually climbs up to Roaches end. I had the choice there of taking a left and going on to explore Luds Church or right to take the path up to the Roaches ridge. The rain and wind were picking up by then so I decided on the shorter walk along the ridge.

There was a mass of fell runners I had to keep stepping aside. By the time I got to the trig point the rain was horizontal ....very refreshing !!.

As I got to the end of the ridge the next decision was whether to carry on to Hen Cloud or take the stepped path back down to the foot of the Roaches. As I was soaking by this time (I hadn't taken waterproofs) I took the path down back to the car.

Next time I'll go better prepared 9and in better weather and do Lud's Church and Hen Cloud.

19th October 2013. Birthday walk. Baslow edge

I had planned to do a walk with Erica and Damien, but unknown to me Anne had arranged a few other fellow walkers :-

Anne, Erica , Damien , Jake , Tom , Toyah an Lilly.

When I realised the girls were coming I re-planned the route to make it shorter, plus anne is still building up the strength in he Ankle that was broken on Holiday.

So we parked at Curbar gap car park and followed the path along Baslow edge to Wellingtons Monument, and then we took the path down towards the A621. Just before crossing the road we stopped for a bite to eat, and Anne pulled a birthday cake out of he rucksack !!

Cross the road that comes down from the car park and pick up the concessionary footpath across the edge of Big Moor until we reached a junction of footpaths. Right would have taken us along White edge and left back to the car park.

We took the left path and was soon back at the cars. A great little walk for my birthday. Proud of the girls to have covered 3 miles.
