Cleveland Way day 1 Helmsley - High Paradise Farm 19th March 2025

The day before was a travel day. Train from Langley Mill to York, and then a bus from York to Helmsley. Nice stay in the Black Swan inn, and then I set off around 8 AM after a big breakfast.

Start of the adventure

Easy walking and navigating for the first five miles to Cold Kirby where I was meeting Richard for a section of todays trek.

Reivelaux Abbey

The bridge near the Abbey

When I arrived at Cold Kirby Richard was had just arrived - perfect timing. As we got close to Sutton Bank we skipped the spur to the top of the bank where the Kilburn White Horse is. By all accounts you can't see the horse from the top of the bank. Instead we headed for the visitor centre for a cuppa and cake.

From there we followed the signs to 'The best view in England' which also put us back on the trail

The best view ? - unfortunately very hazy in the distance

A few miles later Richard had to leave me to continue his round walk back to his car at Cold Kirby.
It was only a few more easy miles to High Paradise farm.

A new arrival

The accomodation was brilliant. I cooked the food I had brought (sausage casserole boil in the bag), had a shower and lit the log burner. As usual on these treks I then had a fantastic sleep.

Perfect days walking, 14.5 miles. Total Ascent 1748 ft.

Birchen Edge 4th March 2025

I had originally planned a walk from Mam Tor along Rushup Edge, but as the road between Grindleford and Hathersage was closed I opted for plan B which was a drive back to Chatsworrth and a hike up to Birchen Edge. Added bonus is free parking at Chatsworth at this time of the year. The main difference this time was after crossing the road near Robin Hood Pub I turned right onto the concessionary path rather than lefyt towards Gibbet Moor.

As expected this path eventually brought me out at the top end of Chatsworth (Stand Wood)

Interesting carving in Chatsworth park

Not a bad plan B. About 7.5 miles.

Big Moor 27th February 2025

Second time out here. I parked at the layby on the A621 and unlike last time did a 5 mile round walk across Big Moor and then across the road onto the edge of Ramsley Moor.

I met a couple of wild swimmers who had just had a dip on the pool on Bar Brook. The trail down the edge of Ramsley Moor was steep and muddy.

Great spot for a wild swim

Shipley Park 26th Feb 2025

First half of the Cleveland way in a few weeks time so I have set myself a target of  3 - 4 days per week of 20K + steps.  I did the full circuit - from home into the park - out along the Nutbrook trail and around the old American Adventure site and back home through the park and Woodland Trus land.

No pics on this treck,

Map from my Garmin connect app

About 8 miles. Total ascent 555 ft. Total descent 548ft

Harboro Rocks 14th February 2025

First walk since Meg died a week ago. Still very sad not to have her with me.

I parked up at the National Stone Centre and just a hundred yards from the car park I joined the pennine bridleway which is a disused railway track. Navigation was simply a there an back through Middleton Top

A nice walk. About 6 miles.

Unfortunately on my return I found the va had rolled backwards into a tree. The handbrake musn't have fully on. It is going to be a costly repair.

Shining Cliff Wood - Cromford Canal 30/07/2025

  Great walk. About 7 miles.
